Last night I attended a Social Media session held by the Tourism sector in Jordan in particular by Mr. @MichaelNazzal And organised by Tech Jordan and Social Media Expert Mr. @AliDahmash Gave a great presentation introducing Social Media you can check out his Blog and his Reach2.0 Company, and there were other several presentations about the impact of Social Media on Tourism Sector worldwide and how this sector can utilize the Social platforms to gain more business.
We were all wowed by a surprise visit by Her Majesty @QueenRania and if you follow her Twitter account you will know she has done a lot to promote Tourism in Jordan.
So as Jordanian citizens, how can we promote Tourism in Jordan? (Via Social Media)
1- User Generated Content (UGC):
User generated content (UGC) covers a range of media content available in a range of modern communications technologies. It entered mainstream usage during 2005 having arisen in web publishing and new media content production circles. Its use for a wide range of applications, including problem processing, news, gossip and research, reflects the expansion of media production through new technologies that are accessible and affordable to the general public. All digital media technologies are included, such as question-answer databases, digital video, blogging, podcasting, forums, review-sites, social networking, mobile phone photography and wikis. In addition to these technologies, user generated content may also employ a combination of open source, free software, and flexible licensing or related agreements to further reduce the barriers to collaboration, skill-building and discovery. Content is King, and now with the new Social Media Revolution there is a power shift, consumers now depend on UGC more than the advertiser.
So, Before people travel they will go online and read reviews about about the Brand (Country, Touristic Site, Hotel, Airline, Restaurant)
There are top Global Review sites out there that has great exposure such as:
And there are some review sites Regionally:
And some Local review sites:
*If you have any more more Review sites please do share them with me and I will update the list
So, Let’s go back to UGC, we need to create content/presence that is organic, credible and authentic.
I urge all Jordanians to Socialize their outdoor experience; let me explain
When you visit a Cafe, go back online to one of these Review sites and document your experience (Positive or negative)
–Review (Post your review and offer recommendations)
–Add visuals (Photos & Videos) if you can
–Add Tips (For Example: Which meal is best at this place)
–Suggest a Touristic place
2- Location Based Services (LBS):
A location-based service (LBS) is an information or entertainment service, accessible with mobile devices through the mobile network and utilizing the ability to make use of the geographical position of the mobile device. Wiki
We can stick to FourSquare for now, install it on your Blackberry or iPhone, when you visit a Cafe, Restaurant or a hotel, you turn to your FourSquare App at your mobile, then you Check-in to the place you are at, then you can add tips & photos. Once you complete your Check-in It will be sent to your Twitter & Facebook accounts.
When you do this, there will be new rating system for each business (Hotel, Restaurant, Cafe) if I was a Tourist who is visiting Jordan for the first time I would check on those businesses and see which one has the highest Check-ins
So using LBS will put Jordan on the map
One of the key components in successful social media marketing implementation is building “social authority”. Social authority is developed when an individual or organization establishes themselves as an “expert” in their given field or area, thereby becoming an influencer in that field or area. Wiki
OR in simple English, they are People on Social Network with large amount of followers/Friends
These are some of my favorite INFLUENCE TRACKING TOOLS:
- Alltop – Blog RSS aggregator organized by topic. Lists feature top blogs in each category edited by Alltop staff. Check out Alltop for Education.
- Klout – Score-producing, public face that measures an individual’s ability to move their networks to action.
- Listorious – A Twitter List indexing site that organizes community-produced Twitter lists into categories. Search for lists around your niche or industry and find relevant Twitter users in the subject matter.
- Postrank– Community manicured blog rankings by topic and based on engagement.
- TweetReach-Find out the” velocity of your tweets“, how far they have traveled, their reach, and influencers who spread your content here.
- Social Radar- Gives a broad overview of what conversations are taking place about your topic while allowing you to view the relationships between different sources of influence on the web using their infographic style “Visualizer” tool. (Love this!)* Thanks to ANGELA MAIERS Blog
Now, Tourism sector in Jordan need to meet with those influencers and agree on a campaign and ask them to help spread the campaign around.
Here is a list of influencers in Jordan on Twitter
In conclusion; we need to come up with a catchy hashtag something I heard during the event like #DiscoverJo or #ExplorJo OR Maybe stick to #VisitJordan and use it.
I would like to add that when tweeting about Tourism in Jordan, it is best to get a global exposure by adding few hashtags, so:
@Shusmo: Going to #DeadSea #JO (Hashtagged the location and the country) this weekend with friends #VisitJordan (Main hashtag) #Tourism #Travel (Global hashtags, maybe one is enough)
I’m suggesting a meeting with Tourism Sector leaders in Jordan and Social Media influencers to work on a Mega Strategy on how to attract Tourism to Jordan.
Remember we have 2 different spells of tourists (Gulf & Europeans) So there have to be 2 different approaches
How can YOU promote Tourism in Jordan?
